"A valuable and relevant text, with much to offer lay builders, engineering student, and any engineer focusing on the unique issues surrounding construction in Arctic and sub-arctic regions."
—Doug Goering, College of Engineering and Mines

This is a new edition of a classic work on how to confront the realities of construction in arctic environments. Thirty years ago Dr Rice, a professor at the University of Alaska School of Engineering, identified and offered solutions for several key building problems. The problems are still with us and the solutions are still relevant. Chapters include discussion of the pitfalls of permafrost (which constitute eighty percent of the reasons for building failures in Alaska), how to heat the ideal arctic house, access water, dispose of waste and install the vapor barrier.

Not just recommended reading for Arctic Engineering students, this book is of value to anyone new to buying property or building a home in the north. It is written in a style that is easy to understand for anyone with even a moderate amount of technical skill while still relevant to architects and engineers. Not just recommended reading for Arctic Engineering students, this book is of value to anyone new to buying property or building a home in the north.
