The late Robert Emmitt was a native of Ohio who lived in the West for a number of years as a newspaper and university press editor. In gathering the material for The Last War Trail, he spent a great deal of time on the present Ute Reservation in Whiterocks, Utah, learned the Ute language, and visited the White River country of Colorado where the conflict took place.
