Policy Preventing the Use of AI in Peer Review

Peer review at UPC and its imprints is a fundamental part of maintaining the integrity and scholarly rigor of our publications. In order to maintain the confidentiality and privacy of our authors, editors, and contributors, we prohibit the use of AI tools, including generative AI and large language models, in the drafting or generation of peer review reports. Submitting unpublished works into LLMs without the explicit consent of the author or publisher introduces significant risks, including potential breaches of confidentiality and intellectual property rights.

Because AI lacks the capacity for nuanced human judgment and cannot engage in the reflective process necessary for providing meaningful academic critique, its use undermines the trust and purpose of the peer review process. Peer reviewers are expected to rely on their own expertise, judgment, and critical analysis in evaluating manuscripts. Reviewers must affirm that their feedback is the result of their own intellectual labor, independent of AI intervention.
