Annual Report 2017-2018
In 2017–2018, the University Press of Colorado and Utah State University Press produced forty-one new titles and editions in the fields of anthropology, composition, folklore, history, and natural history, and seven of our publications won awards. These awards include the Council for Writing Program Administration Best Book Award (Reclaiming Accountability) and the International Writing Centers Association Outstanding Book Award (The Working Lives of New Writing Center Directors). We also copublished Basic K'ichee' Grammar: Thirty-Eight Lessons, Revised Edition (IMS Monograph Series) with the Institute for Mesoamerican Studies at the University of Albany and Navajo Textiles: The Crane Collection at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science with the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, and the latter was awarded the Southwest Book of the Year.
In addition, we also published, copublished, or distributed other important publications from member faculty and departments. Faculty publications included Archaeological Persectives on Warfare on the Great Plains (Douglas B. Bamforth, University of Colorado Boulder), Circulation, Writing, and Rhetoric (Laurie E. Gries, University of Colorado Boulder) Class in the Composition Classroom (Genesea M. Carter, Colorado State University), The Last Stand of the Pack, Critical Edition (Andrew Gulliford, Fort Lewis College), and Writing and School Reform (Joanne Addison, University of Colorado Denver). We also copublished the following titles with the WAC Clearinghouse:
International Exchanges on the Study of Writing series
Emerging Writing from the Middle East-North Africa Region
Perspectives on Writing series
Acknowledging Writing Partners
Contingency, Exploitation, and Solidarity
Practice & Pedagogy series
A Writer's Guide to Mindful Reading
Writing Pathways to Student Success
Finally, we distributed Collecting on the Edge: Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art for the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art at Utah State University and Women of the West (Volume 6, Manifest West series) for Western Press Books at Western State Colorado University as well as the following titles from the Center for Literary Publishing at Colorado State University:
Instead of Dying (2017 Colorado Prize for Poetry)
The Lapidary's Nosegay (Mountain West Poetry Series)
We Remain Traditional (Mountain West Poetry Series)
The Center for Literary Publishing at Colorado State University's Beautiful Flesh: A Body of Essays edied by Stephanie G'Schwind also won the 2018 Colorado Book Award in the anthology category.
During fiscal year 2017–2018 we raised $281,000 in contributed revenue from a combination of member dues, title subsidies, and individual donations. We also increased the balance of our endowment fund with The Denver Foundation by just over fifty percent to $61,000. We still have some way to go before meeting our near-term goal or raising $250,000 before we start using earnings and interest for operations, but raising funds annually for the endowment, however modest the amount, is important to the long-term sustainability of our publishing operation.
In June 2018, I completed my term on the Board of Directors of the Association of University Presses, although I will continue to serve the Association on a newly created committee that will be reviewing its annual operating statistics program. We live in a data and metric-driven world, a world in which humanities and social science departments and, yes, university press publishing programs, increasingly must rely on analytics and statistics to prove their value. Evaluating the Association's data collection program for its relevance to making the case for university presses is consequently a very important charge. I am glad to have some ongoing part supporting not just the essential work done by University Press of Colorado and Utah State University Press, but also that of our peers around the globe.

Staff Updates
After more than two decades with Utah State University Press and University Press of Colorado, first as Director of Utah State University Press and then as Associate Director of UPC, Michael Spooner retired on September 30, 2017. Members of the board and staff celebrated his remarkable contributions with a retirement party held at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. Rumor has it that Michael is enjoying his retirement thoroughly.
Rachael Levay stepped into Michael Spooner’s considerable shoes at the end of August 2017. Before joining UPC as the acquiring editor for the Utah State University Press imprint, Rachael worked at the University of Washington Press for over a decade in marketing and sales, most recently as the Marketing & Sales Director. Rachael also has a master’s of fine arts in Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina Greensboro.
Jessica d’Arbonne, acquiring editor, left University Press of Colorado after nine years for a job with Globe Pequot as an acquiring editor for their FalconGuides imprint. Jessica started as an assistant to the director of the press, but quickly moved up the ranks to acquiring editor, continuing to build and shape UPC’s key lists in anthropology and history.
Charlotte Steinhardt was named acquiring editor after Jessica’s departure, shifting into editorial after two years in University Press of Colorado’s marketing and sales department. Before joining UPC in 2015, Charlotte was on the trade and academic team at Oxford University Press for five years.
Office Relocation
After fifty-three years in Boulder, including eighteen located at 5589 Arapahoe in east Boulder, the University Press of Colorado relocated its main office to 245 Century Circle in Louisville, Colorado. Although the space is slightly smaller, the office building and the suite we occupy constitute a considerable upgrade. If you happen to be in the neighborhood, stop by and say hello!
Navajo Textiles
Winner of the Southwest Book Award for 2017, this beautifully illustrated work is the result of multiple collaborations. The book was published jointly by the University Press of Colorado and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, and the text was written by a team of scholars (Laurie Webster and Louise Stiver) and active Navajo weavers (D. Y. Begay and Lynda Teller Pete). As is the case with most natural history institutions, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science has the space to display only a small fraction of the material objects in its full collection. The publication of Navajo Textiles presents a wider range of the stunning Navajo weavings contained in the Crane Collection—one of the largest collections of Navajo textiles in the world—to a larger audience than the small group of scholars who might normally access the full assembly. The Denver Museum of Nature & Science hosted two different events for the general public highlighting both the book and samples from the collections, one in October and a second in April. Both were well attended, and gave the public the opportunity to learn more from both the scholars who study these textiles as well as the weavers who continue to produce new work today.
Cámara Retórica
This publication, winner of the 2017 Computers and Composition Distinguished Book Award, is bit different of a departure for us, in that this non-traditional book consists of six video essays, or chapters, that connect film and video production, feminist filmmaking, and Rhetoric and Composition. A collaborative effort of Utah State University Press and the Computers and Composition Digital Press, Alexandra Hidalgo's Cámara Retórica is openly available as an online publication on the CCDP website. A History of Mortgage Banking in the West
The financial collapse of 2008, although a decade past, is still very much present in the minds of many who worry about the underlying strength of the market today. Given that the Great Recession was driven by bad bets in the subprime mortgage market, why not write a history of mortgage banking in Colorado and the West? That is exactly what mortgage banker Mike Rosser and historian Diane Sanders did, with support along the way from the Public Lands History Center at Colorado State University. The combination of Sanders's writing talents and historical knowledge with Rosser's exceptional insider knowledge of the mortgage banking industry produced a highly readable and entertaining book on a subjed that might not obviously be either of those things at first blush. You can hear Mike Rosser talk about the book on Devil's Advocate with Jon Caldara and read more about the book in the Colorado Real Estate Journal.
